Government Arts and Science College, Aranthangi, was established in 2010 and is situated in the rural village of Perunavalur, approximately 10 km from Aranthangi and near Avadiyarkovil. The college is located in a region of rich historical, cultural, and spiritual significance, close to the renowned Avudaiyarkoil, associated with Thiruvasagam, the celebrated Shaivite devotional work composed by the ninth-century saint-poet Manickavasagar.
Establishment and Development
With the combined efforts of the Government of Tamil Nadu and Bharathidasan University, Bharathidasan University Model College, Aranthangi, commenced its functioning on 22 September 2010. Initially, the college operated from a rented building on the Government Polytechnic College campus. Subsequently, it was shifted to its permanent campus.
In 2019, the college was taken over by the Government of Tamil Nadu and continues to serve as an important centre of higher education for students from rural and economically diverse backgrounds.
Academic Growth
The college began its academic journey with 155 students enrolled in three undergraduate programmes. Over the years, it has expanded considerably and now offers seven undergraduate programmes and three postgraduate programmes, catering to approximately 2,000 students.
The institution is supported by a dedicated team of 57 teaching faculty members and 12 non-teaching staff members, whose collective efforts contribute to the academic growth and overall development of the college.
Infrastructure and Learning Resources
The college has well-equipped laboratories in Computer Science, Physics, and Chemistry, providing students with opportunities for practical learning and skill development.
The college library caters to the academic needs of students and faculty members. It houses more than 3,000 books and journals covering the disciplines of Arts, Science, and Commerce, thereby supporting teaching, learning, and self-directed study.
Student Development and Extension Activities
The college promotes the holistic development of students by encouraging their participation in extracurricular, co-curricular, and extension activities. To create social awareness and foster a sense of responsibility among students, the institution has established units such as the National Service Scheme (NSS) and the Red Ribbon Club (RRC).
These initiatives provide students with opportunities to engage in community service, health awareness programmes, social outreach, and other activities that contribute to their personal growth and social responsibility.

Government Arts and Science College, Aranthangi, functions under the Directorate of Collegiate Education, Government of Tamil Nadu. The college is affiliated with Bharathidasan University and follows the semester system of education.
